String Art - Soul Craft Workshop Houston TX Creative Workshop

This year for Christmas, I wanted to give the people in my life experiences instead of "stuff". So when I saw that Soul Craft was putting on a string art workshop, I thought that might be a fun event to take my mom to. And I was right! Don't get me wrong - the perfectionist in me struggled with it, but we had a great time hanging out with the group of ladies, crafting and laughing!

For this post, I thought I'd break it down for you in case you'd like to make a string art project of your own.

Gather your materials. You'll need a wood plank, hammer, nails, thread, and an image you;d like to recreate.

Paint your wood. I knew I was going to include this in a gallery wall in my living room, so I chose this gray color.

Place the image on top of the wood (after is has dried).

Begin by driving the nails in by only 1/4 of the total nail length. You'll want to start with the points of the image that define it - like edges and corners - and then work your way into the details.

I wanted to show a lot of the detail in the shadows, so I had a lot of nails.

Before you rip your paper off, take a picture with your phone for reference. Thank God for that reference point or else I would not have known what was what in this one!

See how that phone trick comes in handy? You'll start by outlining the main edges - in my case that was the different mountain peaks. Simply loop the thread once around each nail as you go along.

After you have the edges done, you can loop the rest together however you like. You can make a design out of it or just go crazy trying to fill it in like I did.

I opted to use two colors because I wanted to add a snow type effect onto it, but of course you don't have to do that if you don't want to.

I love this craft because the possibilities are endless! You can create anything you can dream up! And Diana was such a great teacher! I love that every Soul Craft workshop has 3 elements - a natural material, connections with others, and giving back (they donate a portion of every workshop to a charity that the group decides on after the workshop).

I can't wait to see what the next one is. I'm hooked!
